1. Low-threshold and curbless entrances

Every seat must be designed for wet use; wall-mounted seats need appropriate structural backing; portable seats must not rock or slide; weight-capacity claims should come from verified product specifications; and seat height and position should reflect the intended user — there is no universal seat height.
3. Grab bars
Horizontal bars support steady movement, vertical bars help at entries, and angled bars can serve rising from a seat — placement relative to the seat, entry, and controls matters more than any catalog diagram. What every anchored bar needs: structural backing planned before wall finishes, a graspable slip-resistant surface, and enough visual contrast to find quickly.
Grab bars are not interchangeable with towel bars — a towel bar is not designed to provide the same structural support. And suction-cup bars may lose attachment: follow manufacturer instructions exactly and never treat them as equivalent to permanently anchored bars for transfers; used that way they can provide false confidence.
4. Handheld showerheads
A handheld unit is the single most versatile water-delivery feature: it supports seated bathing, makes caregiver assistance practical, and simplifies rinsing and cleaning. Look for an adjustable-height mount, a hose that genuinely reaches the seated position, an on/off or pause control at the head, comfortable pressure, and a holder placed where it doesn’t interfere with grab bars — with the hose routed to avoid trip or entanglement issues. 5. Reachable controls
The test: can the water be turned on and adjusted without standing directly under it — ideally from outside the spray or from the seat? Lever handles operate with a closed fist or forearm and suit limited grip strength; hot and cold should be identifiable at a glance with easy-to-read markings; and in caregiver situations, controls should be workable by both people without difficult twisting.
6. Temperature and anti-scald features
Thermostatic controls hold a set temperature; pressure-balancing valves prevent sudden shifts when other fixtures run; anti-scald features and clear markings add margins of safety. None eliminates all burn risk — testing water before entry remains sensible — and valve selection and settings are a plumbing review, not a DIY task. Local codes often govern what must be installed.
7. Slip-resistant surfaces
Small textured tiles with more grout lines, mosaic floors, and surfaces with verified slip-resistance ratings all improve wet grip; mats and adhesive strips are the retrofit versions. Doorless layouts remove the obstruction entirely — but still require careful water-containment and drainage planning, and favor larger showers.
10. Lighting and contrast
Good general lighting plus a wet-location-rated fixture over the bathing area removes the shadows where missteps happen. Plan for nighttime use, limit glare from glossy tile, and use contrast deliberately — a seat, bars, and controls that stand out from the wall are easier to find and use. Switch placement and fixture selection are electrician territory, not DIY.
11. Drainage and water containment
Water has to go to the drain and stay off the bathroom floor. That means correct floor slope, a well-placed standard or linear drain (linear drains suit curbless designs), sound waterproofing or a proper shower pan, and honest planning of transitions, curtains, or glass. A low threshold alone is not enough if water regularly escapes onto the floor — that just relocates the slip hazard.
12. Shelves and storage
Bathing supplies belong between hip and shoulder height: recessed niches and corner shelves keep bottles off the floor and edges out of the way, and stable wall-mounted dispensers remove fumbling. Check reach from the seat, avoid sharp corners at body height, and keep caregiver-needed items accessible too.
13. Shower size and configuration
From compact stalls and transfer-style layouts to roll-in configurations, large custom showers, and tub-footprint conversions — bigger is not automatically better. Past a point, a large shower puts the seat, bars, controls, and supplies farther apart; the winning layout keeps everything reachable from the bathing position.
